Which came first the chicken or the egg? For me my love of wine came first followed by my love of running and I guess I needed to find a way of burning off all those extra calories!
Running has been a part of my life for the last 6 years and over that time it has waivered. I have run a lot, a little and a little lot. Injury, work, holidays, fatigue have played a part in determining whether I ran the distance (having completed half marathons) or hit the snooze button to delay an early morning run that never eventuated.
New Year’s Eve 2016 sitting around the table at a good friend’s house we all shared our resolutions for 2017 and mine was to run a marathon. I had the marathon in mind that I wanted to run – nice flat course around my city. I started out the year on a high and trained for a good couple of months. The date was a good 6 months away so I had given my self ample time. I did not follow any plan but took it slow and increased my mileage gradually without overdoing it so as to avoid injury.
I communicated with others as to what my intentions were and sharing made it all the more real. The deal breaker was when work (a new job at that) started up and my time and energy was diverted and I had to let my running go. At the time, the stress meant that my real first love was always with me.
This year I have not made a new year’s resolution as such but over December I got back into my running and I am slowly building up my mileage. My aim is to fulfil what I didn’t in 2017. The kilometres clocked up to date over December and January;
December 19 – 6.03km
December 20 – 6.87km
December 22 – 6.02km
December 24 – 6.01km
December 27 – 6.06km
December 31 – 7.01km
So in 2018 I have decided to combine the two and run the ‘Runaway Barossa Marathon’ in South Australia.
Indulge yourself
Enjoy a weekend of restaurants, wineries, brewers, bakers and a finish line situated within the Peter Lehmann winery. Cross the line smiling and treat yourself. You’ve earned it.
Enjoy Responsibly.
I have decided to make this experience a memorable one that will not only fulfil a desire I have had in me for some time but to do it in a beautiful part of the country in a celebratory style. It may just turn into a mini holiday if friends plan to join. A little cheering and encouragement will go a long way.
Now is the time to start thinking about nutrition and hydration and making sure my body gets everything it needs and continues to thrive on a plant based diet. It will involve some trial and error but I have time to get it right. Time to see what works, what hinders and what enhances my performance. All the while, cruelty free meals that will energise me.
